Microsoft announced a new product last year, Windows Server 2012 Essentials, a packaged solution for small and mid-size companies with less than 25 users.

Windows Server 2012 Essentials provides easier setup, installation, and migration experiences—and a simplified management experience—compared to "out of the box" Windows Server 2012 Standard or Datacenter editions.

Despite this, users with a very small amount of Windows server installations have been looking for ways to install Windows Defender in order to provide at least a basic level of security.

While this is not officially supported, it does provide an increased level of security that is better than nothing, however it’s recommended that you look into using a proper product that is fit for purpose such as Microsoft’s System Center Endpoint Protection (SCEP) which is an enterprise antimalware solution.

Like its predecessor Windows 8, Windows 10 also ships with Windows Defender.

For users coming from Windows 7, the Windows Defender in Windows 10 is not just the Defender of Windows 7.

By now, you likely have upgraded your Windows 7 installation to Windows 10 by using the free upgrade offer from Microsoft and probably wondering why Microsoft Security Essentials is not available for Windows 10.

Microsoft Security Essentials provides most of the protection methods that Windows Defender does with the exception of rootkit and bootkit protections.
